Student playing an instrumentThe orchestra program at Atlee High School has been growing steadily since 1992. Our orchestra students perform a range of concerts, and many of our graduates have gone into music performance and music education at institutions such as The Cleveland Institute of Music, William and Mary College, Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University, George Mason University, and more. The orchestra is very proud to have had two salutatorians and two valedictorians participate in our program all four years of their high school career.

The program is comprised of two orchestras:

  • The Atlee String Ensemble
  • Atlee Chamber Orchestra

Showcase Performances

Each group performs four main concerts each year—fall, winter, district festival, and spring. Additionally, the Chamber Orchestra will often play in our Rock Concert Showcase Benefit, Java Jive, performing pieces such as Viva La Vida and Sweet Dreams as well as performing alongside regional rock bands such as SNMNMNM, Lost in the Trees, We Know Plato!, and The Never.

Both orchestras are proud to showcase the orchestra program as part of our "Tiny Tots Concert," which we hold every December for Hanover's elementary school children. And in recent years, the orchestra has worked with the Chickahominy Middle School orchestras, Hanover elementary orchestra programs, Lee-Davis High School Orchestra, and Stonewall Jackson Middle School Orchestra, to perform with Mark Wood, as part of the Electrify Your Strings Concerts. Several of our top students perform in small chamber ensembles too, serving the needs of various celebrations, graduation, ceremonies, and art shows.

Award Winning

The Atlee Orchestra program has consistently performed with honors at the local District Festival and regional competitions, earning Superior and Excellent Ratings.

Each year, both orchestras combine as one to travel to a music destination to explore our country's best music and arts scenes. In years past, the orchestras have visited and performed in Disneyworld, Boston, New York, Washington D.C/Baltimore, and Virginia Beach.
