Ensembles

Atlee’s orchestra program is comprised of two ensembles: string ensemble and chamber orchestra.

String ensemble is a non-auditioned group for anyone with at least one year of orchestral strings experience. Students in grades 9–12 are welcome to join! The group performs grade 3–4 level music.

Chamber orchestra is an auditioned group made up of students in grades 9–12. Interested students receive audition materials in the spring. The group performs grade 4–6 level music.

Evening Concerts

Each group performs in three evening concerts each year (winter, pre-assessment, and spring). Both orchestras perform music ranging from classical to fiddle, rock, movie themes, etc.

Other Performance Opportunities

Both orchestras perform at local competitions held at Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion. Students also perform every year at HCPS’s all-county orchestra and VBODA’s District 1 concert assessment where students have consistently earned superior and excellent ratings. Orchestra members participate in outreach performances with elementary and middle schools as a fun way to recruit new students to the orchestra program.

Both orchestras go on a big trip every few years. Recent destinations have included New York City, Nashville, and Washington, D.C.
