Mr. Hortz is now in his 6th year as assistant principal at AHS. Mr. Hortz holds a bachelor's degree in history from Monmouth University and a master's degree in administration and supervision from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining Raider Nation in 2019, Mr. Hortz served in an administrative capacity at Colonial Heights Middle School (CHMS) for ten years, first as their assistant principal from 2009 to 2010, before taking the reins as principal for nine years. During his tenure at CHMS, Mr. Hortz led the Colonials to 10 consecutive years of full accreditation; implemented a 1:1 Chromebook initiative; planned and supervised renovations of their gym, auditorium, and cafeteria; implemented a character education program; and evaluated approximately 85 total employees.
Prior to transitioning to an administrator, Mr. Hortz was a history teacher at Vernon Johns Middle School in Petersburg for two years before moving to CHMS as a history teacher from 2005 to 2009. During his time as teacher at CHMS, Mr. Hortz was named the 2008 CHMS Teacher of the Year and the 2009 Colonial Heights Public Schools Division Technology Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Hortz holds a postgraduate professional license in social studies and administration and supervision, PreK–12 and is married to Marcie Hortz, a Lee-Davis High School and Virginia Tech graduate, and is a father of one son, Jaxson, who attends Hanover High School.
